Self-employed? Know your enrollment dates
If you work for yourself or run a small business, your health coverage may not work the way an employer plan does. According to CMS, coverage through the Individual Health Insurance Marketplace does not give you a Special Enrollment Period for Medicare.
That makes your Initial Enrollment Period, the 7 months around your 65th birthday, especially important. I walk you through your dates so you can avoid a gap in coverage or a late-enrollment penalty.

Medicare questions from Laguna Beach residents
I buy my own health insurance. When do I need to sign up for Medicare?
In most cases, during your Initial Enrollment Period, which starts 3 months before the month you turn 65 and ends 3 months after. Group coverage through a current job may let you wait, but individual or Marketplace coverage doesn't work the same way, so check your situation early.
What happens if I wait too long?
In most cases, if you don't sign up for Part B when you're first eligible, you pay a late enrollment penalty for as long as you have Part B. My turning-65 guide goes through it step by step, with sources.
Can you help by phone or video?
Yes. We can meet by phone, by video, or in person, and family members are welcome to join.
What does it cost to work with you?
Nothing. The insurance company pays me a commission, not you, so your premium is the same whether you enroll through me or directly with Medicare. There's no fee for a consultation, a plan review, or the yearly check-in.
Meet me at a no-cost Medicare workshop
I host in-person workshops in Mission Viejo that explain Medicare basics in plain English. No obligation.
